What is a Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation process designed to assist with diagnostic clarity, treatment planning, and generating valuable insights into an individual's mental health. It involves gathering detailed information through interviews and various activities to evaluate cognitive functioning, problem-solving abilities, memory, social skills, emotional processing, and more. The goal is to provide a thorough understanding of the individual's strengths, weaknesses, and specific areas of concern, ultimately leading to tailored recommendations for intervention strategies.

At our practice, we provide psychological evaluations for individuals aged 8 through 55, addressing a wide range of presenting concerns, including mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, neurodevelopmental conditions (ADHD/ ASD/ LD), personality disorders, and other emotional or behavioral issues.

Limits of a Psychological Evaluation

While our psychological evaluations can address a wide range of presenting concerns, there are specific types of evaluations that we do not conduct. These include:

  • Forensic evaluations

  • Parental fit assessments (evaluations intended for parental custody disputes)

  • Dementia/Alzheimer's evaluations

  • Employee capability assessments

  • Substance abuse assessments

It's important to note that our services are not designed for emergency or crisis situations. Due to the comprehensive nature of our evaluations and the associated wait times, we recommend that individuals in crisis or requiring immediate intervention seek more urgent care services. Our evaluations also require a high level of engagement, which may not be suitable for those in acute distress.

Evaluation Process

  • Step 1. Referral Process

The referral process varies depending on your insurance plan. Some plans require a formal referral from a primary care provider, while others allow self-referral. Check with your insurance company for specific requirements. Regardless, you can submit a request for services through the "Get Started" tab on our website. After submission, you will receive an email confirming your placement on the waiting list, along with an estimated wait time.

  • Step 2. Paperwork

When you or your child reaches the top of the waiting list, one of our psychologists will contact you. You will be asked to complete paperwork on our EHR portal. If you plan to use your insurance benefits to cover services, we strongly recommend contacting your insurance company to determine your coverage for our level of care, potential out-of-pocket costs, and any specific requirements that must be met for insurance coverage. The assigned provider can share essential details that you may need when making the call to your insurance company.

  • Step 3. Intake

After completing the paperwork, the assigned psychologist will contact you to schedule the intake appointment. This meeting, typically held virtually, will involve discussing your concerns and gathering information to determine if an evaluation is appropriate and to develop an assessment plan.

  • Step 4. Testing

If the psychologist determines that a psychological evaluation is appropriate and you meet the insurance medical necessity criteria, they will schedule the testing appointments with you. In some cases, prior authorization from your insurance may be required before scheduling. Testing is typically completed in one day, lasting between 3-4 hours, and will be conducted in-person. Your psychologist will provide additional details about what to expect on the day of testing.

  • Step 5. Evaluation Report

After the testing appointment is completed, the psychologist will write the psychological evaluation report, documenting the findings of the evaluation. The completion of the report can take between 4-6 weeks. The report will either be shared with you before or after the feedback meeting.

  • Step 6. Feedback Meeting

The final step involves meeting with the psychologist for a "feedback meeting" where the psychologist will review the findings, answer any questions, and discuss the recommended treatment plan based on the evaluation results. This will be another virtual meeting, and the attendees will be planned with the psychologist in advance.
